Last night, the Fundación Juan Bautista Gutierrez awarded HELPS International Q300,000 ($37,500) for its education programs in Guatemala. The foundation awarded Q1.2 million ($150,000) to three social organizations that promote programs in education and/or health care in the rural communities of the country.
Isabel Gutiérrez de Bosch, president of the Foundation, commented that this year -in its eighth edition of the prize Apoyando a Quienes Apoyan (Helping Those Who Help)- they received 70 applications from various organizations that work to eradicate poverty through education and health.
"It is impressive that there are more and more associations interested in putting forward plans to help the people in need due to the lack of government support. These groups work very professionally and are very dedicated, which is the reason that the programs are so successful and effective," said Gutiérrez de Bosch.
Three organizations were chosen among 7 finalists. The awards were announced at a Gala Banquet at the Intercontinental Hotel in Guatemala City. The groups Asociación Pro Salud, Educación y Desarrollo K'aslimaal; Chuwi Tinamit, and HELPS International where chosen for first, second and third place respectively.
