Hurricane Stan came ashore Tuesday morning with 80 mph winds. Stan hit Central America far harder than Mexico and emergency workers continued to look for victims Wednesday beneath the mud and rubble.
In Guatemala, over 100 people were killed, mostly in landslides, according to the national disaster agency officials. Flooding in more than 194 communities forced the evacuation of more than 12,000 residents. Nearly all of the country's rivers overflowed their banks, and landslides and fallen trees blocked at least 30 roads, wiping out homes, cars and businesses. In some parts of the country, road access has been destroyed, bridges have crumbled, roads washed away.
This is a national tragedy; there isn't a corner of the country where there isn't pain and destruction to be found. |
