Rita Martin has been a part of making volunteer trips a safe and rewarding experience. Her attention to the incredible details of the teams can never be under reported. And her heart for the work is extraordinary. [Introduction written by Stephen W. Miller, HELPS President and CEO]
My name is Rita Martin and I am the US Team Coordinator for HELPS. Almost 15 years ago, at a very low point in my life, I asked God to direct me to where HE could use me best. From the moment I talked to Steve Miller, President of HELPS, I knew that HELPS was where I needed to be.
In those years, we have seen HELPS grow from 4 medical teams of 35 volunteers and a handful of small construction teams, to sending over 1,000 volunteers a year to Guatemala. This growth has allowed me to make friends with people all over the United States, Canada, Europe and Central America. Since that time, I have gained two grandchildren, a new husband, became a widow, and felt the love and support of the HELPS family through it all.
I have been to Guatemala 13 times where I have carried cinderblocks for the construction of HELPS' school in Santa Avelina, assisted with surgery scheduling, and helped cook for 125 people at a time on medical teams. I have left part of my heart in the mountains of Guatemala. I do not speak Spanish, but am a "fluent pointer" and have learned that love has no language barrier. When you read this, I will be in Guatemala getting my annual "Guatemala fix" that inspires me to push papers and peck on computer keys the rest of the year with a full heart.
Many times when people become deeply involved in the inner-workings of an organization they become disillusioned. For me, HELPS is just the opposite. My greatest admiration goes to the team leaders who dedicate a year of their life, year after year, to organizing and fielding medical and community development teams. Then there are the teachers who have brought a whole new world and brighter future to the children of Guatemala. Add to these the multitude of volunteers who donate their time, talent, and money to make all of HELPS' dreams come true. Being part of a staff who considers working for HELPS a vocation, not a job, and who gives of themselves 24/7 is the best I can ask for. Thank you!
