Jose Castro, a teacher from Joyabaj who has no arms due to an electrical accident, heard about HELPS' prosthesis team from people in his town. He decided to visit the HELPS office in Guatemala City to see if the doctors could fix his prosthesis. He did not bring his prosthesis with him, however, and was disheartened when the doctors said there was nothing they could do without available prosthetic limbs. Jose Castro went home to locate his prosthetics, and returned the next day! The amazing thing was that the team of doctors brought an obscure part for an arm prosthetic, but had no reason to do it. Jose´s prosthetic was cracked and could only be fixed by using this obscure part, which they brought by accident. Everyone was incredulous. Jose Castro's broken prosthetic limited his writing ability and restricted his reach. As a teacher, this was problematic because he could only reach chest height when writing on the blackboard. This video footage is a wonderful salute to the human spirit of the HELPS volunteers, donors, and the people we serve.
